Sleigh Bells’ debut album dropped with a definitive bang last May, introducing the world to a hyper fusion of metal, electro, and 1960s girl-pop. Quite frankly, it was unlike anything I had ever heard before. Lead singer Alexis Krauss’ wispy but melodic vocals anchor the otherwise erratic beats, which themselves are a fascinating mishmash of hardcore metal guitars and throbbing electro beats. On “Infinity Guitars,” Treats’ second single, Krauss’ partner in musical crime Derek Miller rips the song apart with an inherently hummable guitar riff while Krauss herself finds a happy medium between singing and screaming that accompanies the music harmoniously. The album isn’t entirely filled with heart-racing jams, as evidenced on the stellar “Rill Rill,” a beautifully repetitive track that hearkens back (much like the music of Best Coast) to the simpler days of pop-rock in the 1960s, while never quite abandoning the synth-happy beats of the rest of Treats. Other songs like “Crown on the Ground” and “A/B Machines” take time to really appreciate, but that’s the fun of Treats, an album that—upon repeated listens—provides exactly what its title promises.
